Who Is This Figment?

It’s that time of year again.  The snow is threatening to fly.  Thanksgiving is creeping up on me fast.  I guess it is time, again, to take stock of who I am.  I don’t do that nearly often enough.  Sometimes focusing on me takes a back seat to almost everything.  Periodically it is a good thing to do.

I am mom to two (or three) … My babies are grown.  My son is 26 and my baby is 24.  Both are growing into incredible people.  I’ve also acquired an additional son (the fiance of my son) who is also growing into quite a young man.

I am an Oracle database administrator (actually… also an Apps DBA for those of you who know what that is) and an MBA.  The MBA didn’t actually gain me much, but it has helped me to understand better how what I do impacts the business and how the business impacts the things that I do.

I ran (okay, okay… per my rheumy… walked very fast)  my first half marathon (Valentines day 2010) and my second (February 2011) and a few others since then.  Right now, I’m training for the 2019 Princess Fairytale Challenge at Disney.  I’m psyched.  I never thought I could do a challenge series, and this will prove to me that I can.  More to the point, I’ve started to actually improve my run times.

I am 50 something

I am the daughter of a breast cancer survivor.

I am the wife of an Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis patient.

I crochet

I take pictures

I love Disney

I have been diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis (December 2009). This means that I hurt and I get swollen and I will have an autoimmune disease for the rest of my life.

I am a survivor

I am not fast, but I am strong (sometimes)

<this is where you stop and think and take stock of your life>

  13. Hey,

I wanted to get in touch because I think you might be interested in an interactive web page we are currently working on to raise awareness for RA.

Because it is Arthritis Care Awareness Week very soon (13-19 May), I believe this would go really well on your blog, and be of great interest to your readers.

Our infographic will be visible on a web page which we will share with you once completed.

We have a teaser snippet of the infographic to give you a first viewing so let us know if you want us to send that over! You are more than welcome to embed this on your website as well. We hope you help us in raising awareness for RA and spread the word!

Let me know if you would like any more information. I look forward to hearing from you.

    Kind regards,

    Lucy

  14. Nice to meet you. You and I are quite similar, except in the work field. lol

I was diagnosed with RA and Fibro on June of 2007, I am a single mom of a 20 year old son, and, like you taking stock of my life since my diagnosis. In fact, have had to make some MAJOR changes in my life since. Hence, single mom. My conditions, RA, FMS, Sjorgen’s (recent dx), depression, anxiety, and all the other conditions that hang on to autoimmune conditions, caused the final downfall of my marriage. It was heading south, but being diagnosed with an incurable disease was something that my ex couldn’t handle. He was never good with me being ill (I had endometriosis early in our marriage), but when it came to a condition that he knew I would never recover from, and that couldn’t be treated away, he felt helpless and had no idea how to deal, and ended up becoming bitter. A lot of that bitterness was targeted at me because after losing a job I LOVED and worked my butt off to get, (working at the same company for 7 years – working my way up), he claims I gave up…well I didn’t, my body did, which is how it affected my job, leading me to losing my job. He couldn’t understand that doing certain things like “getting out more”, etc., weren’t what I needed to do as they could only exacerbate my symptoms. So, now I am in a different state, state of mind, and living life differently without someone telling me what they think I should be doing to help me.

Virtual pain free hugs… It’s wonderful to meet you. It’s kind of sobering to realize how much things are the same for so many of us… but on the plus side, it makes connections easier and more fun!

  17. You have a really nice fitness and nutrition blog. I started a fitness website that will officially launch January 1st 2014 at projectmayhembodies.com. The site’s purpose is to bring quality personally owned health blogs together on one site. I was curious if you would be interested in having some of your fitness articles appear on my site. The sites I’ve created get around 100,000 hits per month and I hope to do the same with this site which of course would generate more exposure for your own site. You can go here for more info: http://projectmayhembodies.com/health-blogger-wanted/ or email me at kcsportsninja@gmail.com

What is in Italian, Google Translate helps with. It’s not always completely accurate, I know, but close enough to get the meaning, and understand the beauty in the original.

      Love and Light, Anna!

  20. Dear Ali (not sure if this is your name?):

My name is Kathleen Engel and I am an editor at Health Monitor Network in Montvale, NJ. My company publishes guides on various health conditions that are distributed free to patients through doctors’ offices. (You can see our site at healthmonitor.com.)

Right now I am working on an article for the next issue of our Guide to RA. (If you’ll send me your email, I’d be happy to send you a PDF of an older issue so you can see what the guide looks like.) The article is a roundup of tips from a number of contributors that I hope will be helpful for our readers with RA (who will pick up this guide in their rheumatologist’s office). The idea is roughly “Tips to help you cope with your RA around the clock.”

Are you able to contribute a tip or two? I would love to run your quote along with your photo. I am looking for self-care tips that you do that I can tag to some point of the day: Upon waking up, breakfast, mid-morning, Noon/lunch, afternoon, dinner, evening, bedtime, while sleeping.

Tips could be anything interesting that you do that helps with your RA, from meal prep tips, to a smoothie you always make at 10 AM, to meditation, exercise, a special pillow that helps you sleep, a stretching routine, warm bath with Dead Sea salts or whatever helps YOU. Also, tips can deal with anything that is a part of RA, not just the pain, but fatigue and brain fog, too. (I’d just ask you to tell me why you’re doing it. So, for example, the smoothie—maybe you’ve found it quells your mid-morning cravings, which is helpful for keeping your weight down.)

The only caution: I can’t include anything about medication.

Thanks so much. I look forward to hearing from you and do hope to include your comments. Once the guide is printed, I’m happy to send you a PDF and, if you’ll send me your mailing address, hard copies. If we put it on our web site, I can send you a link you can put on your blog, if you like.

Any questions, please let me know!

    Best,
    Kathleen Engel
